Austin police have taken into custody a 20-year-old man accused of stabbing two individuals at a local coffee shop while dressed in a zombie costume before fleeing the scene and crashing into an unoccupied autonomous vehicle.
The suspect, identified as Shankar Temple Grace, was apprehended Wednesday night following a search that ended approximately three miles from the initial crime scene. Authorities located Grace on a walking trail after he allegedly committed the violent attack at The Buzz Mill, a coffee shop and bar in the Texas capital.
The incident occurred shortly before a scheduled comedy performance at the establishment. Police responded to what they classified as a “disturbance hot shot,” a designation reserved for rapidly escalating situations involving immediate threats to life or serious physical harm.
First responders arriving at the scene discovered two victims suffering from stab wounds. One victim sustained life-threatening injuries, while the second victim’s injuries were assessed as non-life-threatening. Both individuals were transported to a local hospital and were last reported in stable condition.
According to witness accounts, the assailant wore elaborate zombie makeup that covered his face during the attack. The Halloween costume element has added an unsettling dimension to an already troubling incident.
Following the stabbing, Grace allegedly commandeered a pickup truck and fled at high speed. His escape came to an abrupt end when he collided with an unoccupied robotaxi. The autonomous vehicle was not carrying passengers at the time of the crash, preventing additional casualties.
The Austin Police Department’s swift response enabled officers to track the suspect’s movements and establish a perimeter. Their methodical search of the area culminated in Grace’s discovery and arrest on the walking trail.
Investigators have learned that this was not Grace’s first disturbance at The Buzz Mill. Patrons of the establishment informed police that the suspect had caused problems at the bar prior to Wednesday’s violent outbreak. This history suggests a pattern of concerning behavior that preceded the stabbing.
The attack has raised questions about security measures at entertainment venues, particularly during the Halloween season when costume-wearing patrons are commonplace. The Buzz Mill regularly hosts comedy shows and other events that draw crowds, making the safety of performers and attendees a paramount concern.
As the investigation continues, police are working to establish a complete timeline of events and determine whether additional charges may be forthcoming. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet disclosed whether the victims were known to the suspect or were randomly targeted.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of public safety challenges faced by law enforcement. The Austin Police Department has not released additional details about the ongoing investigation, but officials have assured the public that there is no continuing threat to community safety following Grace’s arrest.
Both victims remain hospitalized as they recover from their injuries, and their identities have not been made public.
