New York Republican gubernatorial nominee Bruce Blakeman has issued sharp criticism of popular entertainer Harry Styles following the singer’s public tribute to a migrant shot during a federal immigration enforcement operation in New York City.

The incident has thrust immigration policy and law enforcement procedures back into the spotlight as the gubernatorial race enters its final weeks.

Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old migrant from the Dominican Republic, was shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers during a targeted arrest operation on Thursday. According to federal officials, Belgal was shot after allegedly refusing to comply with officers’ commands. His 5-year-old son was present in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

During his performance at Madison Square Garden, where he is conducting a 30-night residency, Styles paused his show to honor Belgal. “I just want us to take a moment to think about Oscar Belgal tonight, and I want us to just think and remember to just look after each other,” the singer told the audience.

Blakeman, appearing on a national morning program Tuesday, challenged the appropriateness of the tribute given Belgal’s criminal history. “I think Harry Styles should put that guy on his tour bus and tour around the country with this guy, who is a convicted criminal,” Blakeman stated. “He is alleged to have gang activity. He is alleged to be involved in drug-dealing poison to our children.”

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Belgal has previous arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession, and weapons possession. Federal officials have also alleged that Belgal maintains ties to the Trinitarios street gang. Senior ICE official Marcos Charles defended the officers’ actions during a Friday news conference, providing details about what prompted them to discharge their firearms.

The Republican candidate characterized Styles’ tribute as disconnected from the realities facing New York communities. “It is elitist, it is out-of-touch, and quite frankly, it is wrong,” Blakeman said. “We have to get these illegal migrants with criminal records out of our communities.”

The incident has drawn renewed attention to New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s sanctuary policies, which Blakeman has made a central issue of his campaign. The Republican nominee contends that thousands of ICE detainers have gone unheeded by local authorities under current state policies.

“This is who he wants in our communities? This is who he sticks up for, rather than federal agents who just want to do their job?” Blakeman asked, directing his criticism at the entertainer’s public stance.

The shooting and subsequent celebrity response represent the latest flashpoint in the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement in New York, where state and federal policies have increasingly come into conflict. As the gubernatorial race approaches its conclusion, immigration enforcement and public safety have emerged as defining issues separating the candidates.

The facts of this case are clear. Federal immigration officers conducting a lawful operation encountered resistance. A suspect with an extensive criminal record and alleged gang connections was shot in the presence of his young child. And now, the public square must grapple with whether celebrities using their platforms to memorialize such individuals serves the interests of justice or undermines the difficult work of law enforcement.
