A tragic sequence of events unfolded in the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles on Tuesday evening, leaving five people dead and a community in mourning after two separate transportation accidents occurred within blocks of each other.
The first incident, a collision between a Metro bus and an SUV, occurred at approximately 5 p.m. local time, claiming two lives and injuring several others. As emergency personnel responded to that scene and multiple news organizations dispatched helicopters to cover the developing story, a second tragedy struck.
Shortly before 7 p.m., an NBC Los Angeles news helicopter crashed between two commercial buildings in a fiery impact that killed three people, including two crew members aboard the aircraft and one pedestrian on the ground. The helicopter, identified as NBC’s NewsChopper, was reportedly covering the earlier bus collision when it went down.
KNBC anchor Colleen Williams confirmed the identities of the two crew members lost in the crash as reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw. A fourth individual was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that four vehicles and two storage containers sustained fire damage before crews successfully extinguished the flames.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass addressed the city at a somber news conference late Tuesday evening, describing the situation as “a heartbreaking night for our city.” In a subsequent statement, Bass expressed her devastation over the loss of life and extended gratitude to the city’s emergency response teams.
“I’m absolutely devastated by the loss of life in Chatsworth tonight,” Bass stated. “My heart is with the families and loved ones of those we lost in the tragic bus collision and helicopter crash.”
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna offered his condolences to the families affected by both incidents, noting particular sympathy for the NBC4 news team mourning the loss of their colleagues.
Governor Gavin Newsom also released a statement expressing solidarity with the victims’ families and the NBC4 organization, while thanking first responders for their tireless work throughout the evening.
The cause of the helicopter crash remains under investigation. Both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have announced they will conduct a thorough examination of the incident. According to the FAA, the aircraft was a Eurocopter AS350 with two people aboard at the time of the crash. The NTSB will lead the investigation and provide updates as information becomes available.
The Chatsworth neighborhood, located in the San Fernando Valley, remained an active scene as public safety officials continued their work into the night. Authorities urged residents and media to stay clear of the area to allow investigators and emergency personnel to perform their duties without obstruction.
This double tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced not only by the public in their daily travels but also by journalists who venture into the field to report the news to their communities.
