The United States Coast Guard reported Tuesday that a 15-year-old boy was the sole survivor after a fishing vessel capsized off the coast of Alaska earlier this week, claiming the lives of two other mariners.
Coast Guard personnel located the teenager Monday morning clinging to the overturned 18-foot skiff approximately four miles east of St. Lawrence Island. The young survivor was experiencing symptoms of hypothermia when rescue crews arrived on scene.
The search operation commenced early Monday morning after Alaska State Troopers notified the Coast Guard Sunday evening that the vessel had failed to return as scheduled. The boat had been expected back at 3 a.m. Sunday, but severe weather conditions and poor visibility prevented rescue crews from launching their mission until the following morning.
When conditions improved sufficiently for flight operations, Coast Guard air crews spotted the capsized vessel with the teenager still clinging to its hull. Personnel deployed a life raft equipped with survival gear to the scene. A civilian vessel in the vicinity responded to assist, ultimately pulling the hypothermic teenager from the frigid Alaskan waters.
The bodies of the two other mariners were recovered from the water by the same civilian vessel that aided in the teenager’s rescue. Their identities have not been released pending family notification.
The incident underscores the persistent dangers faced by those who venture into Alaskan waters, particularly during periods of inclement weather.
