Fire crews in Derby, Kansas, responded to an unusual emergency Saturday evening when lightning struck and ignited a massive animatronic dinosaur at Field Station: Dinosaurs, a local theme park attraction.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. when witnesses on the ground observed a lightning bolt strike the Sauroposeidon replica, one of the park’s largest and most prominent attractions. The structure, measuring 100 feet in length and weighing nearly 60 tons, quickly became engulfed in flames following the strike.

Derby Fire Department personnel arrived on scene to find the giant replica fully ablaze. Crews from neighboring agencies were called in to assist with the firefighting efforts, which required considerable resources given the size and nature of the burning structure.

Guy Gazelle, executive producer at Field Station: Dinosaurs, confirmed that multiple witnesses observed the lightning strike directly hit the animatronic dinosaur. The dramatic scene unfolded as severe weather moved through the area, creating hazardous conditions that would ultimately lead to the destruction of one of the park’s centerpiece attractions.

Firefighters worked diligently to contain the blaze and prevent its spread to other areas of the theme park. Their efforts proved successful, as crews managed to extinguish the fire without any additional damage to surrounding structures or exhibits. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

The Sauroposeidon, named after a genus of sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, had been a significant draw for visitors to the park. These long-necked dinosaurs are among the tallest creatures ever to walk the Earth, and the replica served as an educational tool as well as an entertainment feature for families visiting the attraction.

The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of severe weather and the potential hazards posed by lightning strikes, particularly to large metallic or electronic structures. Theme parks and outdoor attractions across the country maintain protocols for severe weather events, though direct lightning strikes remain difficult to prevent entirely.

Field Station: Dinosaurs has not yet announced plans regarding the replacement or repair of the damaged animatronic, nor has the park indicated whether the incident will affect its operating schedule. The full extent of the damage to the structure and its underlying support systems remains under assessment.

As communities across the Midwest continue to experience spring storm systems, officials remind residents and visitors to outdoor venues to remain vigilant during periods of severe weather and to seek appropriate shelter when lightning is present in the area.

The Derby Fire Department expressed satisfaction with the coordinated response that prevented what could have been a more extensive incident at the popular family destination.
