A family vacation in Utah’s remote backcountry became a desperate rescue operation Friday when a parent fell approximately 70 feet from a cliff edge, sustaining critical injuries in terrain that tested the limits of emergency response capabilities.
The incident occurred in the Pritchett Canyon area near Moab, a region known for its dramatic rock formations and challenging hiking conditions. The family of four had parked their off-road vehicles and embarked on what should have been a routine hike to view the area’s natural rock arches.
During the excursion, the family divided into two pairs, with one parent and child moving ahead at a faster pace while the other parent and child followed behind. At some point during the hike, the trailing adult ventured too close to the cliff edge and fell. No member of the family witnessed the fall itself, but one of the children heard screaming and immediately rushed down the trail to alert the other parent that something had gone wrong.
What rescuers discovered at the scene was sobering. The fallen hiker had suffered what emergency personnel described as a “badly broken body,” including open fractures and suspected internal injuries. The severity of the injuries and the remote location of the accident created significant challenges for the rescue team.
The parent who received the alert was able to summon help using the satellite function on an iPhone, sending a text message to 911. This technology, which allows communication in areas without cellular service, proved critical in initiating the rescue response.
A helicopter crew responded to the emergency call and managed to land approximately 150 yards from the injured hiker within five minutes of notification. The swift response time was remarkable given the rugged terrain and remote location of the accident site.
Rescuers placed the injured hiker in a rescue litter for transport. The Grand County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team coordinated the operation in terrain that presented substantial obstacles to traditional rescue methods.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present in Utah’s backcountry areas, where dramatic vistas and natural beauty coexist with genuine hazards. The Moab region attracts thousands of visitors annually, drawn by its unique geological features and outdoor recreation opportunities. However, the same characteristics that make the area attractive also create conditions where accidents can quickly become life-threatening emergencies.
The condition of the injured parent following transport has not been disclosed. The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.
