An Indianapolis city councilor and his young son awoke to gunfire early Monday morning in what authorities are investigating as a politically motivated attack connected to a contentious data center proposal.
Ron Gibson, a third-term member of the Indianapolis City-County Council, reported that an assailant fired thirteen rounds at his front door shortly after midnight. The gunman left behind a clear message: a note placed in a sealed plastic bag on the doorstep reading “NO DATA CENTERS.”
“My 8-year-old son and I were not physically harmed, but we were awakened by the sound of gunfire,” Gibson said in a statement released Monday. “Like any parent, I immediately ran to him and reassured him that he was safe.”
The councilor emphasized the gravity of the attack, noting it extended beyond political intimidation. “This was not just an attack on my home, but endangered my child and disrupted the safety of our entire neighborhood,” he said. “I understand that public service can bring strong opinions and disagreement, but violence is never the answer, especially when it puts families at risk.”
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene around 9 a.m. Monday after Gibson reported the incident. Officers confirmed finding evidence of gunfire and characterized the shooting as “an isolated, targeted incident.” No suspect has been identified at this time. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined the investigation, indicating the serious nature of the threat against an elected official.
The timing of the attack is significant. Days before the shooting, Gibson attended a Metropolitan Development Commission meeting where he advocated for rezoning land in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood to accommodate a proposed data center facility.
Data centers have emerged as flashpoints of controversy in communities across the nation. These facilities, which store, train, and operate artificial intelligence models, have drawn criticism for their substantial drain on local power grids. The increased electrical demand drives up energy costs for ordinary residents who share the same infrastructure.
Beyond electricity consumption, these facilities have demonstrated alarming water usage rates, raising concerns about environmental impact and public health consequences in the communities that host them. Local opposition has grown as residents weigh the economic promises of such developments against their potential costs to quality of life and municipal resources.
The attack on Gibson’s home represents a dangerous escalation in what had been a civic debate over land use and community development. While passionate disagreement over policy matters is fundamental to democratic governance, the resort to violence and intimidation threatens the very foundation of representative democracy.
As investigators work to identify the perpetrator, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by public servants and the importance of maintaining civil discourse even amid profound disagreement. The safety of elected officials and their families must be protected if citizens are to feel secure in pursuing public service.
The investigation continues, with local and federal authorities working to bring the responsible party to justice.
