A man lost his life and four others sustained injuries during a shooting incident that happened on Saturday evening at a New York City park where a sizable crowd had gathered for a basketball tournament, according to the New York Police Department.

The shooting began around 7:27 p.m. with multiple attackers opening fire within Haffen Park in the Bronx. This caused the assembled crowd to disperse and take cover. Police officers arrived at the scene in the Baychester neighborhood of the Bronx after receiving 911 calls about multiple gunshot victims.

Upon their arrival, officers discovered a 32-year-old man who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and a 17-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the face, as per the police statement. The man was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, whilst the girl remains in critical condition. Three other victims arrived at hospitals in private vehicles and are reported to be in stable condition.

This incident follows another mass shooting that the NYPD responded to just a week prior. Three men were killed and eleven were wounded in an incident involving multiple shooters at the Taste of the City Lounge, a bar and restaurant in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood. Detectives are still on the trail of two suspects believed to be involved in the lounge shooting.

Despite these incidents, NYPD crime statistics reveal a reduction in homicides citywide by 19.6% compared to the same period in 2024. Similarly, the number of shooting victims has decreased by 19.4% and shooting incidents have fallen by nearly 20% compared to last year.

As investigations continue, police are withholding the name of the deceased man from the park shooting until family notification has been completed. Meanwhile, authorities are appealing to witnesses to come forward with any relevant information. This raises important questions about the motive behind the shooting, which, according to reliable sources, remains under investigation.
