An elderly man in the United Kingdom, aged 76, has found himself in the grip of the law, suspected of distributing candy tainted with sedatives to young boys at a summer camp.
The man, identified as Jon Ruben, stood before a judge in a court in the heart of England last Saturday, facing charges linked to child cruelty. The court ordered Ruben to be held in custody until an upcoming hearing scheduled for August 19. During the brief court session at Leicester Magistrates’ Court, Ruben declined to enter a plea.
The police received information last Sunday about children falling ill at Stathern Lodge, a repurposed farmhouse, complete with a sports hall and catering facilities, located roughly 120 miles north of London.
Eight boys, aged between 8 and 11, along with one adult, were transported to a hospital as a precautionary measure. All have since been discharged. Ruben’s arrest took place on Monday at a local pub in proximity to the lodge.

Ruben, a resident about 15 miles from the lodge, faces three charges. These include accusations of ‘wilfully assaulting, ill-treating, neglecting, abandoning or exposing children in a manner likely to cause them unnecessary suffering or injury to health,’ concerning three boys at the camp.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the community, affecting most notably the children and their parents,” said Janine McKinney, the chief crown prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in the East Midlands.
Stathern Lodge is under the ownership of Braithwaite Gospel Trust, a Christian charity. However, police were quick to underline that the proprietors are independent from those people who use or hire the lodge and are not connected to the incident.’
We must uphold the importance of staying informed and attentive, particularly when it concerns the safety and well-being of our children, the future custodians of our world.
